Here some instructions on how to use .bfs mods for FlatOut (any version):

1) There is NO NEED for unpacker to use mods.

2) FlatOut2: Most of the mods are made for a patched game to V1.2. If yout game is not V1.2 patched, then get it here. (Watch out, there are 2 versions of the game: the US one on 5CDs and the European one on 1DVD - get the right patch!!).

3) If the mod you'downloaded is an archive (.zip .7z .rar) extract the content of the archive to your hard drive, then copy the .bfs from it to your game directory), else copy directly the .bfs to game directory.

4) If there is a readme file with the mod, READ IT and search for installation instruction, incompatibility, file order etc...

5) Edit your "patch" file (in game directory) and add the mod .bfs at end of it (ONE FILE PER LINE, NO EXTRA SPACE after it, NO EMPTY line anywhere in "patch" file).

6) If you're not comfortable with editing patch file "by hand", you can use Mod manager there is one here by pixeldoc, and another one by deStan (cannot find the link for now, but it's included in FOJ Community Mod Part 5)

Once you have added new car mods in your own custom BFS file, how do you update the ICON's on the car selection screen (ie: What file is it..) and what Tool are you using to modify DDS files ??

TIA..

In our community mod for FO2, parts 1-5, if you unpack FOJs_Community_Mod_Updates2.bfs ( part 5 ), you will find 3 dds files under \data\menu. FO2 uses the iconstest files to load the car icons in the car select menu.

car_iconstest3.dds - carpack 3
car_iconstest4.dds - carpack 2
car_iconstest5.dds - carpack 1

Here pic of old car_iconstest file:

If you want to change a car icon pic so it look like your new custom car, you will need to blacken out the old car you want to replace in dds file and then take a pic of your new custom car and crop pic and shrink down to the right size to fit in car_icontest*.dds file and blacken out the background so only see the car and paste this on the car_icontest*.dds file you want to edit.

Blacken out icontest:

I use Photoshop Elements 10 now, with the 32bit Nvidia DDS plug-in. The 64bit dds plug-in did not work with my 64bit Vista.

Edit:

If you don't have Photoshop, you can use The Gimp and Gimp DDS plugin (that's free and working very well).
